Frequently Asked Questions

When seeing a Naturopath for the first time, many people are unsure what to expect. Below I have attempted to answer some of the most frequently asked questions.

Just know that at all times you will be treated as the unique person that you are, and your treatment plan will be personalized to suit your specific health needs and goals.  Your health, your way.

There is no such thing as a silly question, especially when it comes to your health. If you have any further questions, don’t be shy, just ask.

What is naturopathy?

According to the Australian Traditional Medicine Society (ATMS), Naturopathy is “a holistic system of healing that incorporates a range of treatments and natural therapies, with the underlying belief that your body given the right support. is able to heal itself. Naturopathy takes a more holistic approach to healthcare with a client’s overall health a priority

Naturopathy uses the best of both scientific evidence and traditional medicine to form a complete system of health care. It is underpinned by six principles:

  • The healing power of nature
  • First do no harm
  • Find and treat the cause whenever possible, not only the symptoms
  • Treat the whole person
  • Education
  • Prevention

Think of a naturopath as your personal holistic health coach and cheerleader for change- someone to help support you, guide you and educate you in all areas of your health and wellbeing so that you can look and feel your best and in time, become your own wellness warrior.

Naturopaths use scientifically-proven natural medicine to get to the root cause of your health concerns. We develop personalised wellbeing plans for our clients to address the causes, not just the symptoms, and help them thrive.  Naturopaths are also preventative medicine specialists, supporting you in your goal to achieve your best health, for life.

Naturopaths draw on a wide range of natural treatment methods, including: herbal medicine, nutritional medicine, dietary and lifestyle advice or other therapies.

Above all, Naturopaths firmly believe your health is your greatest asset, and without it life can be pretty miserable. You only have one body to live in, and life is short, so it is important to make sure you nurture and support your body now, so you can get the most out of life.

What is the difference between a naturopath and a doctor?

Medical doctors operate under a ‘diagnose and treat’ model. Their focus is to keep you disease-free and upright but they don’t usually have the time or inclination to take a 360 view of you and your health to make sure you’re functioning at your best.

While doctors tend to address the symptoms of disease -using various medications, most have very limited knowledge in nutrition, nutritional supplementation or natural healing.

Naturopaths on the other hand take a more holistic approach and are trained to treat the whole person, not just the symptoms. Naturopaths look at ALL aspects of your health, taking into consideration of your physical, emotional, mental and spiritual well-being. They aim to get to the root cause of disease and then employ various natural healing methods to empower an individual to achieve the highest possible level  of health.

To do this, they may recommend diet and lifestyle changes, nutritional supplementation, herbal medicine or various other natural treatments too balance health issues. Naturopaths are also trained in pathology testing and use minimally invasive treatment plans that are unique and personalised to your health needs.

Naturopaths do to take the role of a medical doctor, nor do they diagnose disease. They work in conjunction with your Doctor and other healthcare providers to help you function optimally. Naturopaths help you create and implement an individual plan for your ideal health. If they believe you would benefit from further treatment, they will help you coordinate referrals to trusted professionals in the specific order needed.

Who needs a Naturopath?

I believe everyone can benefit from a naturopathic treatment. Most business people, athletes and celebrities have multiple coaches surrounding them to help them achieve their goals at work and in life.

Given your health underpins your very ability to work, play and enjoy life, why wouldn’t you invest in a health coach to address any existing health concerns and ensure you are operating at optimum health? A naturopath is the perfect health coach and has the experience and knowledge to help guide you to your best health.

Whether you are interested in treatment for a pre-existing condition or preventing future health problems, I can help.

What conditions can you help me with?

If you want to regain energy, treat a known condition or find out what’s making you unwell, I can help.

These are just a few of the health conditions I treat:

  • Digestive issues and gut health including IBS and food intolerances
  • Stress, fatigue, burnout, unstable energy
  • Mood irregularities including anxiety and depression
  • Sleep issues including insomnia
  • Hormone imbalances -including menstrual irregularities, menopause, PMS, period pain, skin issues and fertility
  • Autoimmune disease – ie thyroid disease, celiac disease, rheumatoid arthritis
  • Preconception and healthy pregnancy care
  • Weight loss
  • Detoxification
  • Kid’s health and vitality
  • Immune dysfunction and allergies
  • Acute conditions like cold and flu, coughs, injuries.

What lab tests do you run?

I believe your best to test, not guess when it comes to your health and as such pathology and functional testing is usually an essential component of treatment.

Functional lab testing is not designed to diagnose a health condition or disease but rather gives us a picture of how your body is functioning. These tests can illustrate your body’s strengths, weaknesses and help us identify patterns of imbalance in the body.

Functional testing provides an important piece of the puzzle and when used in conjunction with pathology testing, your health history and current dietary and lifestyle habits , it gives us a full picture of your health and helps us prioritise treatment. With all of this information we can work out the best way to bring your body back into balance by supporting it with personalised healing protocols and lifestyle upgrades.

Depending on your health concerns and goals we may run a variety of lab tests

  • Genetic testing,- to identify your genetic strengths and weakness in the areas of: detoxification, hormones and fertility, methylation, mood and cognition, nutrigenomic, inflammation and oxidation.
  • Hormone Imbalances (DUTCH test, salivary)
  • Food intolerances (IGG panel, Food Detective)
  • Heavy metal and mineral imbalances (hair mineral analysis)
  • HPA Axis Dysfunction (Adrenals)
  • Gut health testing ( CDSA -stool analysis or microbiome mapping)
  • SIBO, dysbiosis and parasites
  • Leaky Gut (intestinal permeability testing)
  • Inflammation and Oxidative Stress

What type of treatments do you utilise?

As a naturopath and holistic health coach, I use various treatment methods in practice, which may include:

  • Dietary and lifestyle advice covering areas such as diet, exercise, stress reduction, rest and relaxation, social support, work-life balance, environmental optimisation
  • Psychological and spiritual aspects of wellness including identification of any hurdles or blocks in these areas and resources to overcome these
  • Herbal medicine
  • Nutritional medicine (supplementation)
  • Practitioner-only, medical grade supplements

Can I claim these lab tests through Medicare?

Unfortunately not.

Medicare only covers fees for tests that keep us disease free -the usual blood tests you order from your doctor when you have symptoms of disease. Functional lab tests, which review how well our body is functioning and keep us in optimal health, are not currently covered by medicare or private health.

I want preventative care , can you help?

Absolutely. One one of the greatest strengths of naturopathy as a profession, is its ability to take a 360 view and help people with preventative care, rather than just disease management. Health optimisation also happens to be a passion of mine. Why wait until you’re sick or completely burnt out to take care of your greatest asset? We can upgrade your health and wellbeing now so you can thrive in all areas of your life.

A treatment plan looking into preventative care would include: full health history review, referral for wellness pathology and functional testing, diet diary to assess how we can optimise your nutritional status, review of your overall lifestyle including work life, environment, social habits in order to supercharge your health.

Can I claim the cost of my consultation via private health?

As of 1 April 2019, patients will no longer be able to claim naturopathic consultations under their private health. Whilst naturopathic associations are fighting this change, this reflects current policy. Other natural therapies will also be excluded including yoga. If you would like to find out more and sign the petition in support of natural therapies, I encourage you to visit www.yourhealthyourchoice

How long will it take to see results?

This depends on how long you have been unwell and how compliant you are in regards to your treatment plan. In general, it can take up to one month of treatment for every year an adult body has been out of balance. However most people notice improvements in your symptoms within a few weeks of commencing their treatment plan.

It’s important to remember that identifying and treating a person’s underlying causes and imbalances can take time. Further, it takes time to implement changes in our diet and lifestyle and for those changes to be reflected in newly generated body cells.

Other than in acute cases, Naturopathy is not a ‘quick fix’ band-aid solution. The goal is to dive deep and discover the underlying issues and then put in place a personalised treatment plan to help you get back to great health. Ultimately, I want to help you understand your body better, educate and support you in natural healing so that in time you can be your own wellness expert.
